The “getting settled index” of the survey gave the city a high score because people said it was easy to get by without speaking Arabic and making new friends and because locals were friendly to foreign residents.
Expats in Bahrain also made more money than the average expat around the world. Twice as many (11% of them) said their annual household income was more than $200,000 (€170,000).
InternNations.org’s Expat City Ranking 2017 is based on a survey of 13,000 people, but they need to say how many people from each city participated.

What Do You Expect When Living in Manama As an Expat?

People say that time goes by quickly when you’re having fun, but it also goes by quickly when everything is new and different from what you’re used to.
When I moved here, I didn’t know what to expect.
North Africa is where I live.
But I didn’t know anyone who already lived here, so taking the job offer to work as a physiotherapist was a leap of faith. It would take me a few months to get used to my new home, but it happened much faster. I soon realized that most expats were in the same situation as me and were eager to make friends and meet new people. Manama is small compared to other capital cities, making it easier to get around first. One of the things that can be bad about living here is that it has fewer things to do in places like Dubai.
It’s easy to get to everything.
Someone told me how long it would take to reach another part of the island on my first day in Bahrain.
The answer was 20 minutes; it takes 20 minutes everywhere! The only bad thing is that you have to drive to most places. Public transportation is getting better, but there is still a long way to go. Because of this, you have to have a car. One of the things I miss about living in my hometown is how easy it is to get around on foot. The need for more natural amenities is one of the worst things about living in Bahrain.
There are few places on the island where you can walk or run without hearing cars passing by all the time.
From what I know about Manama, I’m not surprised it did well, but I wonder if I would have put it at the top of the list.
It’s a great place to live, but when the weather is nice, I miss the hustle and bustle of my town.

Bahrain has a public holiday on the ninth and tenth days of Muharram.

Education in Manama
There are many different kinds of schools in Manama.
